Forwards and ACEMS Girls Coding Workshop

March 30, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

This will be a hands-on coding workshop for Year 11 girls, with the free, open source, software R. R is the language of data analysis, and the goal is to learn about coding to make a data analysis. In the morning, there will be instruction on how to code, and in the afternoon the gilrs will form teams and build a web app to explore wildlife seen around the city of Brisbane, using data from the Atlas of Living Australia.

Girls should bring their own laptops, ideally with R and RStudio (free Desktop version) installed. We will need to be able to install additional R packages during the day. R is the top data science software in the world (along with python), and is maintained by a global community of programmers and researchers. Researchers provide their new methods as R packages on a regular basis, currently close to 15000 available. RStudio provides an interface to R that makes it easier to use, and make this free for the community. If you do not have a laptop, we will be able to provide one, but will need this info a week in advance.

The workshop is brought to you by foRwards (R Foundation taskforce on women and other under-represented groups) and ACEMS (Australian Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers). The workshop is free to attend, but you must register for it here, so that we can provide adequate catering. Please be kind, and register only if you can attend. And if you register, and find you will not make it, please do cancel your registration so that the slot can be made available for another girl.

Individuals are welcome to register themselves. Teachers are encouraged to register up to 5 girls from their school, and are invited to join in with the workshop. The total number of participants is limited to 30.
